BrébeufHx

Collège Jean-de-Brébeuf's
annual hackathon
2019 - 2022

BrébeufHx est le hackathon annuel du Collège Jean-de-Brébeuf. Les objectifs de cet événement sont d'enseigner la programmation aux codeurs débutants et avancés et de susciter l'intérêt pour la programmation.

BrébeufHx 3.0

2020

BrébeufHx 3.0's organizing team was entirely composed of new members.

  • Increased the number of attendees from 70 to 150.
  • Organized an event with only $1 500 in funds (including 3 meals and snacks for 150 participants, and prizes for winners).
  • First event that separated beginner and advanced programmers by giving different challenges and different workshops as a reaction to the increasing amount of beginner participants.

BrébeufHx 4.0

2021

BrébeufHx 4.0 was highlighted by the restructure of the event and of the organizing team, as well as the intent of improving BrébeufHx, and finding ways to adapt to the COVID-19 pandemic.

  • Recruit students to increase the organizing team from 5 to 25 members.
  • Manage the organizers by creating teams, and assigning a team leader for each of them.
  • Started organizing in the summer in reaction to BrébeufHx 3.0's time-related difficulties.
  • Increased the budget from $1 500 to $4 325.
  • Had to adapt to the COVID-19 pandemic by hosting the event online
  • Increased participation from 150 to 300.
  • Created the Hacker Booklet, a document that guides new programmers by giving them programming advice and links to useful YouTube videos.
  • Collaborate with other hackathons (MariHacks & Kurius) for cross-promotion.
  • Collaborated with Kikicode, a programming organization for childre, which resulted in Kikicode sending mentors to teach participants in exchange for promotion. This improved the teaching quality, as their mentors are better at explaining than regular programmers.
  • Changed the beginner challenges by separating them in two categories: HTML challenges and Python challenges. This had the goal of guiding participants in learning programming, as these challenges were more precise than the challenges given during the previous edition of the event.
  • Coordinated the redesign and restructure of the website.

BrébeufHx 5.0

2022

During BrébeufHx 5.0, we built on the foundation we built during BrébeufHx 4.0, concentrating on the details of the event, and finding ways to improve the participants’ experience.

  • Adapt to the continuing COVID-19 restrictions by making the event hybrid (part of the participants in-person, part of the participants online).
  • Increased the budget from $4 325 to $10 100.
  • Added sponsors’ logos on the tickets and behind the lanyards to improve their brands’ visibility.
  • Created a new method of judging the participants’ by using the “science fair” format. This way saves time and lets participants see what other teams did during the competition, creating interest.
  • Partnered with UNICEF Brébeuf to let them sell snacks at the canteen during the event. This was a win-win situation, as it resulted in a budget reduction for us, and money for charity.
  • Gave out custom wireless chargers to all participants at the end of the event to encourage participation. This item was chosen because it’s a tech item that not everyone has, unlike water bottles or earphones.
  • Started giving a detailed custom sponsorship report document to every sponsor after the event, instead of an email. This increases professionalism and the organization of the report.
